Flat-Roof-Epoxy-Coating

Re-roof alternative in its second decade of service!

Rudell Toy Designs operates in a historical building in downtownTorrancethat was once the old newspaper press. After purchasing the building, the owners of Rudell wanted to make some renovations but also wanted to preserve the look and feel of the beautiful, historical interior with its high, open beam ceilings.  Refinishing the exposed beams as part of the architecture did not leave any space for attic insulation, which was a huge concern. Although Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is an expensive roof, it was the only system that made sense for this building. SPF was applied to the dome-shaped roof to act as the building’s insulation.

It was then very important to preserve the new expensive SPF roof with a coating that would hold up to heat and UV from the sun. They chose The SureCoat Roof System to protect the foam from water and UV degradation.  As time passed, it became apparent that the high thermal emittance of the coating increased the cooling affect of the foam roof by keeping heat off the roof.  GREAT results!  Another reason for choosing the SCRS hybrid epoxy coating is due to the problem areas around the base of the dome roof. These areas are not pitched and water sits in the waterways until it evaporates. SureCoat roof coating is unaffected by standing water because it is a waterproof roof coating.

Preserving the foam roof was only one of the many obstacles that the owner of Rudell was up against when looking into a protective coating for their foam roof. Their next battle was that the city would not allow for a white roof on the historical building. By using SureCoat in a light gray color as the protective coating on their SPF roof, Rudell became a pioneer by installing a sustainable re-roof alternative that is now part of California’s Title 24 energy code. Leading the Green Building Movement of America, SureCoat is a roof coating that can contribute to LEED credits with its Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 108. The high reflectivity (86%) and thermal emissivity (93%) of SureCoat can also reduce cooling costs up to 40%. Its renewable options can reduce future roof budgets up to 50% or more. The initial installation of The SureCoat Roof System at Rudell Toy Designs was completed before cool roof standards were required and enforced. There was not yet a large movement forGreenSustainableBuilding, City and State programs for Energy Efficient remodels and upgrades or concern and awareness of the Heat Island Effect. Although not as common today, some cities and communities still do not permit white roofs.

If you have this problem, there is a solution! SureCoat Systems has cool roof systems available in colors other than white! Choose from cool roof shades in tan and gray, in addition to bright white.

With over a decade in service on Rudell’s roof without any failures, SureCoat was the proven solution for a foam roof that ponds water.  It protected the delicate foam roof against heat, UV degradation, water intrusion, environmental pollutants, and wild bird life. At the end of the first 10 year warranty period, the owners of Rudell decided to take advantage of the renewable warranty option offered by SureCoat Systems. The roof was cleaned and top coated, again in light gray, and their warranty was extended for another 10 years. By choosing to recondition their SPF roof, Rudell Toy Designs has a roof warranted for roof leaks caused by ponding water and their future roof budgets have been significantly reduced.
