5 Pre-El Niño DIY Roof Maintenance Tips

Can’t get an appointment with a local roofing contractor?  You’re not alone.  Hundreds of homeowners are already using these five DIY roof maintenance tips and SureCoat small project kits to stop their roof leaks before El Niño hits:

  1. Clear roof gutters. Whether a traditional sloped shingled roof or an Eichler style home with a flat roof, if you have roof gutters now is the time to be sure that they are clear of leaves and debris that would cause clogs. At this time you may also check that the roof gutters are sealed and in tack.

  1. Clean out roof drains and waterways. The waterways are areas that commonly collect leaves and other organic materials as the water is on its way to the roof drains.  Collection of waste and debris around roof drains hinders the proper water drainage from the roof field and can contribute to other roof damage.

  1. Inspect the roof seams and roof field. On flat roofs, look for seams that are separating and check for blisters or bubbles in the roof field.  On sloped or pitched shingle roofs, look for mineral erosion and lifting.  Shingle Saver can be used to keep mineral cap in place, broadcast new granules and helps to preserves asphalt shingles and cap sheet roofs.

  1. Check all roof penetrations and protrusions. Look for splits and separation around anything that penetrates through the existing roofing material.  Check for cracks and splits around Chimney’s, Skylights, Vents and HVAC units.  These can all be areas of water intrusion in the wet season.

  1. After you have completed your roof inspection, make note of the problem areas.  Now would be a good time to measure the areas in need of roof repair or a maintenance seal.  Mark the areas on the roof or take photographs so that you can address the specific areas of concern before the El Niño rains come in.

In most cases the SureCoat Roof System can be used as a repair and patch solution around roof penetrations, roof drains, waterways and even for sealing roof seams.  Click here to view roof repair pictures.
